This project was in association with the neighbouring schools of our university (Coventry University). This was a group project we were assigned by our lecturers, the task was to design a textbook for the subject of PE in primary schools around the city, featuring an element that allowed teachers to grade the students on how they perform each physical activity, equipment needed for the task and instructions on how the activity is done.

As a group, we had decided to illustrate the characters without defining their gender as we felt gender shouldn’t be something which divides sports and draws attention away from the activity being taught. The illustrations were made 2D and freehand in an extremely simple way for bot the teacher and students to understand. For differentiation of right arm/left arm and right leg/left leg, the legs and arms were colour coded to clearly show how to position the body. Arrows were also shown on some sports showing which direction to move in including an illustration of the equipment and how to hold/use it. Although the illustrations were very simple, a lot of planning went into it such as, re-enacting the sports to see how the body moved. This helped to then illustrate the character’s positions correctly with the colour coding.
